History of Lions Club of Calicut

The Lions movement started in Chicago USA in 1917. In 1920, it became an International organization. In 1956 Mr.Noshir.N.Pundole and Mr.Kaiki.B.Godrej took the initiative to start the first club in India in Bombay and later in New Delhi. From then on the growth of Lionism in India has been phenomenal and subsequently, clubs were started in all metros of the country.


In 1959, the Lions Club of Coimbatore extended the Lions club of Calicut, the first one in the state of Kerala. The Lions Club of Calicut was chartered on 31 st of December 1959, which became part of the Lions District 304, S1.

In Calicut, the Lions movement was well accepted by the public and the membership grew steadily. And the Lions Club of Calicut in turn sponsored the following clubs:

Palghat(1960)
Cannanore (1960)
Kasargod (1964)
Tirur (1968)
Feroke (1991)
Manjeri (1999)
Malappuram (1999)
Chathamangalam (REC)(2001)

The Lions movement spread rapidly along the length and breadth of Kerala and today there are 325 clubs in the state with a membership of around ten thousand. The Lions club of Calicut now belongs to the District 324 – E5.

In 1962, the Lions Club of Calicut started the first Lionettes Club (which was later named the Lioness Club) The first Leo Club was started in 1969.The club received innumerable awards from the Lions International, Lions District and the Government for rendering invaluable service to the community. Many eminent personalities also visited the Club from time to time.
